Preparing evidence for a cross-device assessment
What to gather before an external review of multi-device session measurement.
A useful assessment of cross-device session analytics starts with artefacts your team already owns. Collect sample journeys that matter commercially: first visit to registration, research to purchase, or self-serve support across phone and desktop.
Export the current event dictionary, even if it is messy. Incomplete lists still reveal naming collisions and missing device labels. Attach two weeks of aggregate reports so reviewers can see where counts diverge between surfaces.
Note access constraints early. Some organisations can share hashed identifiers; others must work from aggregate tables only. Clarifying that boundary keeps the review focused on session continuity instead of stalled permissions.
Nominate a single internal owner. Assessments stall when product, marketing, and engineering each answer different questions about the same metric.
Finally, write three questions you want answered in plain language. Examples: where do phone-to-desktop handoffs fail most often, which session rule should change first, and what should leadership stop claiming until measurement catches up. Those questions steer the findings toward decisions rather than a catalogue of curiosities.
